An animal-loving plumbing company has been recruited to rescue two scared stray kittens who were hiding

Sharing is caring!

For residents near Ottawa, Ontario, they are extremely lucky to have a home service business that goes above and beyond. The team at Plumbing out of this world have proven they are here to help you…and your furry family members! And quite often that includes animals that are just passing through on their way to a new life. So for two kittens trapped by a local rescue, they gave their adoptive mother one hell of a scare. When the two scared stray kittens discovered a secret hole in her bathroom, she had to call in the professionals!

The stray kittens apparently weren’t quite ready to come out of hiding even safely on the streets.

Their story began as many do for felines born homeless. As wanderers, their mother fought just to give birth to these three beautiful little girls. For the first 5 weeks of their lives, they lived in a wilderness community in Gatineau, Canada, just across the river from Ottawa. A generous pair of neighbors fed the cats, but they needed help trapping them.

They contacted Kelly Wilson who is the owner Vanier Street Cats – Poverty Line Pet Project. Kelly’s plan was to trick the family, encourage them, and hopefully get them adopted. If the mother was too wild, she would be fixed and released. But ideally, the kittens were young enough to be socialized and adopted. They were dubbed ‘The Kitten Mafia’ after a photo showing their ‘mugshots’ was shared. I wonder if the meowfia likes hugs… wink wink.

Neighbors who found them only noticed them within the last 10 days and the mother had never been seen before. I am of the opinion that they are probably not yet weaned from their mother’s milk. I guess mom introduced them to the cat food and moved them to where people started feeding them.

Both kittens look very healthy, I estimate they are no more than 5 weeks old so are still very immature. My concern is for hydration and shedding as they are younger than I thought.

What none of them would realize is that this feline family was ready and willing to fight for their freedom! “Their” freedom, however, was a little different from our idea of freedom. Anyway, it turned out to be a tough trip. Especially with the number of obstacles they asked their saviors to overcome.

When Kelly agreed to help catch the stray kittens and the wily mom, she had no idea what her future held!

It took a day for the first 2 stray kittens and the mother cat to be trapped; and they were a pretty fiery trio! They would be sponsored by the Furry Tales Cat Rescue and being encouraged by Kelly until he is socialized. Easier said than done.

The team had planned to deliver the 2 kittens and mom to Kelly on the night of June 12. But then disaster struck. When the feeder got tired of transferring mommy cat to a carrier, she escaped their clutches! Sadly, she headed straight for a barely open screened window and surprised them all as she rushed through the flimsy barrier.

(Not a real mom cat)

Even knowing that she would probably be harder to trap again now, they would NEVER give up on her – or the third kitten. Kelly was happy to remind anyone who came across the story on social media.

The actual thought that the mother won’t be caught never crossed my mind! I have more reasons than kittens to do what I do.

Because I know all the reasons why leaving a mother behind isn’t just cruel, leaving a mother behind means there will be more kitten lives to save! I have every interest in preventing rather than having to respond to the problem as it escalates.

But as mum escaped, she clearly left some shady wisdom on her two boys left in human care.

The brothers, now named Bugsy and Clyde, were obviously frightened in the new surroundings. But mom cat had to teach them how to “jailbreak” because the two little rascals discovered an escape tunnel! Or so they thought.

Unbeknownst to Kelly, there was a section in the bathroom of her rental apartment that wasn’t quite what it seemed. A small section in the corner of Kelly’s apartment tub was actually not completely dry!

The two sneaky kittens dug into the hole and under the tub right after their meal. This meant that trying to get them out with food wasn’t going to work. Kelly could hear them under the tub and immediately called very experienced plumbers.

This is where the staff of “Out of This World” really proves that their new name is perfect!

Previously DS Plumbing they are famous in their area for defending the animals however they can. Even though overtime was well advanced, team member Trevor was quick to get to the site.

Eventually, the curious kittens made their way into the ceiling of the apartment below the house of Kelly, her owners. Luckily her owner is very understanding, but they had to get the kittens out without damaging the apartments. They were able to open the hole in the shower for a better angle as it needed repairs anyway.

All the while, poor Kelly was simultaneously freaking out – and we would have been there with her.

I had no idea the tub wall was TAPE and not drywall! I’M VERY AFRAID, the kitten’s life is in danger, and I feel so responsible, I really didn’t know it wasn’t a wall. Please can you help me save them AGAIN, I haven’t even tricked mom, but we are still trying.

I blocked ALL the closet, I use it for storage and in the bathroom I fixed it, there is no way they go through it.

After listening to the stray kittens in the walls, they finally found themselves in the hands of their new rescuers.

Kelly shared the photos from the escape attempt scene with the Adventure Timeline.

They were in the bathroom. They found a small hole, it took me a while to find it, I ripped it out so they could fix it. It’s the hole under the sink where they went down into the ceiling.

It was Trevor who finally found them on camera and showed them to me and my neighbor before trying to break through the ceiling.

As a cat rescuer, however, you have to learn to laugh afterwards. Otherwise, you will never continue to go through all the chaos.

They are the ones figuring out how to dig a hole in the roof as I post this and work to block the hole so I can put them back in the bathroom.

You should have seen them last night trying to fit through the same hole that little orange and white is on a mission to dismantle the repair. He finally gave up around 7 a.m. after his little brother covered up the activity by meowing all night. They are petty gangsta partners in crime.

Thank you to everyone who feeds, rescues, rescues again and helps these stray kittens find safety and loving homes!

Vanier Street Cats is a personal project created to prove the need for sterilization in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. We are NOT A TYPICAL ANIMAL RESCUE. #VSC works with abandoned local cats and dogs of prohibited breeds.

I will not be a charity or non-profit as I run my rescue as a loss-making business. Using alternatives to financial requests, we seek support in the form of tangible items and redirect donation funds to local veterinarians for medical and neutering care.

They still haven’t caught the mother cat or the third kitten, but there are some great updates!

The kitten is sunbathing on the terrace outside the house. They are still shy but the person there gives them confidence. We are not leaving without them, we are going to collect them and assemble them again.

And everyone is screaming Plumbing out of this world to never give up!

Plus, this isn’t the first time the amazing animal-loving company has helped save the lives of animals in its community. Or the first time we had the chance to tell their story (see related story at the end of the article).

Kelly is also more than grateful to them.

Thank you so much for coming, I’m so grateful to Trevor and you know what? It’s a catmantoo! He almost made one of the kittens walk in his hand, but the kitten heard me and left!

Trevor is AWESOME, thank you again, we also send nods and purrs to the best company in Ottawa, the Cat Men and Ladies. We can never MEW ENOUGH Dave and Wendy to be the go-to spot for rescuers whose pet manages to get into the weirdest places.

** I mean, even at Cole & Marmalade we fully appreciate those hilarious messages for “Hug your cat day” or “Hug a plumber day”!!!
