Awards recognize the best of the best in plumbing

Each year, the Plumbing Industry Excellence Awards recognize outstanding achievements in the plumbing community. This week, “CityNews” spoke with some of the 2022 finalists.

EVERY year, the Plumbing Industry Excellence Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the industry and education sectors of the plumbing community.

This year, taking place on October 28, the ceremony will see the Master Plumbers Association (MPA) ACT present more than a dozen awards to companies, individuals and plumbing projects that have gone above and beyond.

“The highest professional and ethical standards in our industry continue to be essential to ensuring the best public health, safety and sustainability outcomes for our entire community – of which we are all a part,” said MPA President Jason Tait.

“This is where MPA shines, and through our awards we are also able to shine a light on the outstanding work that continues to be done by individuals and organizations in our region.”

Recognize those who bring the region to life

FIRST Established nearly half a century ago, Master Plumbers ACT has become the flagship organization for the local plumbing industry.

With this year’s Plumber Industry Achievement Awards fast approaching, CEO Claire Howe says it’s a great time to recognize the importance and diversity of plumbers and their work.

“I think in a lot of people’s minds, plumbing is something that happens under a builder, but there’s an incredible amount of work that goes into keeping our water flowing,” she says.

“The plumbers undergo six years of training. They maintain home heating, gas cooking, sewers, drainage and storm water runoff. They deal with gas, medical gas and so many other important projects in residential, commercial and civil construction.

“We try to highlight the diversity that exists in the industry.”

Claire says this year the awards will include a number of new categories that recognize excellence across the industry, including Outstanding Woman in the Plumbing category.

There will also be a number of projects celebrated at the awards, including ‘outstanding’ work on the French Embassy and the ANU School of Physics.

“With the impacts of covid, this is the first in-person event we’ve been able to hold in three years, so we want to make it bigger and better than it’s ever been before,” says Claire.

“We want to say a huge thank you to Evo Energy, Icon and all of our wonderful sponsors. We are also delighted to have the Minister for ACT Affairs and the Minister for Municipal Services present.

“It’s a true celebration of the industry, its diversity and the commitment of the people who make it up.

David Wood, JML plumber.

Local plumber delighted to be nominated for outstanding employee

A PLUMBER for more than a decade, David Wood of JML Plumbers was nominated this year as a finalist for the Outstanding Employee Award.

“I was very surprised, I’m absolutely thrilled,” David said upon learning of his appointment.

David, who says he has always enjoyed working with his hands, first got into plumbing after seeing some of his friends doing similar work.

It quickly turned into a passion for the 37-year-old who has worked at Canberra for over three years now.

“I love it. I just come in and do my job the best I can and help wherever I can,” he says,

“I think it’s always about going the extra mile.”

David says he loves being able to work with JML Plumbing & Gas, a family business with over 25 years of combined plumbing experience.

After starting operations with just three employees and many overtime hours, the company now has 15 employees, six vans, two work utilities and they are building a new warehouse and office to accommodate the growth.

“We know we’re really lucky to have Dave on our team. Our success is in large part due to such great staff,” says Josh Lewis, Director of JML.

“Whether he wins or not, we are proud to call him ours, and he will always be a winner for us.”

6 star director Robert Edwards.

Environmentally conscious craftsman

6 Star Hot Water and Plumbing’s job is to solve their customers’ problems, not create new ones, says director Robert Edwards.

“Neither I nor our artisans accept second-rate work,” he says.

“We work with customers to find solutions that meet their needs and desires.

“Our thoroughness, efficiency and experience save our clients money in the short and long term.”

Robert has been doing plumbing since 1985 and says his tradesmen have been in the business for 10 years.

“I think it’s our very strong focus on the environment that sets us apart,” he says.

“In addition to general plumbing work, we maintain and install solar water heating systems.

“I am personally involved in developing training for new green plumbing technologies and developing Australian standards for hydrogen technologies.”

6 Star Hot Water and Plumbing is a finalist in several categories due to their “Rainwater Harvesting Facility” at the French Embassy.

“It’s nice to be recognized for doing work that benefits the environment and at the same time helps our clients achieve their goals of reducing their impact on the planet,” says Robert.

“The team of workers and apprentices who come to work for us every day and their concern for quality work allowed us to rank among the finalists.”

Small Trader Becomes Grand Prize Finalist

Nixon plumber Chris Williams.

LE Nixon Plumber is a plumbing company specializing in home maintenance, says owner Chris Williams.

The Nixon Plumber opened in 2020, but Chris’ experience began when he started his apprenticeship in 2007.

“I always wanted to work for myself and noticed a gap in decent trades in Canberra,” he says.

“The Nixon Plumber is a reference to the Watergate scandal and ‘The Plumbers’.

“While I can definitely ‘fix leaks’, I also have experience in all aspects of plumbing in residential homes.”

Plumber Nixon has been nominated for the 2022 ACT Plumber of the Year award.

“I think I’m the only finalist to be a small trader and operator and I think that’s helped us get into the pricing, and it helps us provide more personalized customer service.

“We are local to the inner north, but serve all of Canberra.
