Leading industry expert joins building regulator

A prominent Victorian state building surveyor with decades of experience in local government has been appointed as the Victorian Building Authority’s first state building sub-inspector.

Jo van Loon joins an impressive list of industry-leading technical experts who have joined the Office of the State Building Surveyor since its inception in 2019.

As Assistant State Building Inspector, Ms. Loon will focus on improving building safety and consumer outcomes through practitioner capacity building, technical guidance and performance monitoring of contractors. buildings.

Ms. van Loon will also support OSBS in monitoring building sector performance and compliance, identifying and managing emerging risks, implementing education programs, regulatory reforms and process changes. to promote industry best practices.

Victoria State Building Surveyor Andrew Cialini said he looked forward to working with Ms Loon.

“It will be great to have Jo join our dynamic team, leading a group of technical professionals in the fields of fire safety, structural engineering, complex plumbing and building surveying.

“His knowledge and experience as a building surveyor will enhance the work carried out by the VBA to ensure building compliance in Victoria,” said Mr Cialini.

“Building experts play a central role in the building approval process and ensure the safety of buildings. A severe shortage of building inspectors is proving difficult for both local government and the private sector and will be the focus of future activities.”

VBA CEO Sue Eddy welcomed Ms van Loon’s appointment.

Ms. Loon joins the VBA with a wealth of experience as a building expert in local government and the private sector. She worked in local government for 23 years, including with Hobart City Council and the City of Greater Geelong. Over the past 10 years, she has developed her experience in building surveying in private practice, at BSA Building Surveyors in Grovedale, Geelong, as Technical Services Manager and Principal Building Surveyor. Ms. Loon has extensive industry experience, having been involved in building permits, building audits and consultancy work throughout Victoria.

The Office of the State Building Surveyor oversees the technical functions of the VBA, including building auditing, proactive inspection and plumbing audit programs, and expert technical advisory services to the building and plumbing industry.
