TRIPOLI, May 28 (Xinhua) – Libyan Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush met his Italian and Maltese counterparts and the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement on Friday to discuss cooperation against illegal immigration.
“Libya is suffering from illegal immigration,” al-Mangoush said at a joint press conference after the meeting, adding that she and the other three had all agreed to secure the southern Libyan border from illegal immigration with the help of the European Union.
Confirming the EU’s willingness to support Libya, EU Neighborhood and Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi said Libya was returning to stability and security and needed to develop the economy in order to provide from work to its citizens.
Maltese Foreign Minister Evarist Bartolo confirmed Malta’s support for the new government of national unity in Libya, while his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio stressed the importance of strengthening security relations with Libya and commitment for the long-term stability and development of the region.
Libya has suffered from insecurity and chaos since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, making this North African country a privileged starting point for thousands of illegal immigrants wishing to cross the Mediterranean to European coasts. . Enditem
